OMFG PANIC YOU GUYZ

SOMEBODY GOT ON CORNELL’S SERIES OF TUBES AND SET US UP THE BOMB! The virus only contages Windows though… embarrassing.

The full text of the latest computer virus scare:

The Cornell IT Security Office has detected a serious, widespread outbreak of a computer “bot” (an infection) that has the potential to infect all Windows computers on campus.

If you use a Windows computer, or if you use Windows on a Macintosh computer, please read the rest of this email carefully.

This threat spreads when removable devices such as USB thumb or flash drives, external hard drives, iPods, cameras, and the like are attached to Windows computers.

You won’t notice a difference in your computer or your removable devices if they are infected. The only way to be sure is to have them checked.

If you have used any removable devices with your Windows computer in October, there is a good possibility that your computer is infected. You need to have it checked for this threat.

To have your Windows computer checked, consult with your department’s local technical support staff, or make an appointment by calling the CIT HelpDesk at 255-8990 or emailing <helpdesk@cornell.edu>.

Technical instructions, if you have to check your computer yourself, are available at http://www.cit.cornell.edu/security/alerts/usb-bot/

To have your removable devices checked, bring them to one of the special no-cost clinics that Cornell is setting up for this purpose. See http://www.cit.cornell.edu/security/alerts/usb-bot/ for times and locations.

Please note that Symantec/Norton antivirus software is not able to fully protect against this threat at this time, so even if you use Symantec/Norton antivirus software, your computer could still be infected.

The Cornell IT Security Office is blocking network access for infected computers as they are detected to minimize the risk to university data.

Updated information about this threat is available at
