So, this might just get national attention and I can still pre-empt the Daily Sun, so here’s something my friend Chris Donohoe send to me. Chris is a really nice guy, and — sorry dude — we’ve pretty much known he was gay since freshman year. In any case, he is a gay man of faith and that’s something that the religious group he was involved with couldn’t learn to tolerate:

Tomorrow (Thursday, April 23) an article will run in the Cornell Daily Sun. It will showcase the following information.

At the beginning of this academic year I (Chris Donohoe) was asked to step down from my leadership position with a religious organization (Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship) on campus after coming out of the closet. Although the university is taking aggressive action to address this injustice, it is time for the LGBT community and its allies to unite.

This is more than a slap in the face to one individual, this is a slap in the face to the entire LGBT community–especially those of faith. Chi Alpha is basically saying that my sexuality–along with the sexualities of every other LGBT community member–is not legitimate in the eyes of God.

Consequently, we have planned a candlelight demonstration the evening of Friday, April 24. All members of the Cornell and Ithaca community are encouraged to attend this peaceful demonstration. We will gather in front of McGraw Hall on the Arts Quad from 7:15 until 7:45pm as members of Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship gather inside the building for their Friday night meeting. The event will last only 30 minutes.

Who: The LGBT community and its allies
What: A candlelight demonstration
When: Friday, April 24, 7:15pm-7:45pm
Where: On the Arts Quad in front of McGraw Hall
Why: To show that the Cornell and Ithaca Community is unified in its efforts to promote equal rights for all people.

BRING YOURSELF AND 5 FRIENDS!

An architecture project commemorating the 40th anniversary of the exhibit that like STARTED it all, it being “land art.” And where was that exhibit hosted? Right here at Cornell. So some visiting professors in the Architecture program put this shit together. It’s actually mad precise, they use rulers and shit:

There was other cool stuff on the Arts Quad, too. Something less avant-garde and more, um, avant-guard?

Who are they? Ring of Steel! (Risley.) Here’s what the president sent me in an email:

Hi Evan!

Ring of Steel meets Mondays and Thursdays at 8pm in Risley’s Great Hall. For the next few weeks we’ll be using Saturday practices as “fights only” because we have a few performances coming up.

There’s no previous experience necessary; we’d love to have you join us! The doors to Risley are card access, but we’ll have a Ringer standing by the door at the beginning of practices to let people in. You can add yourself to the list-serv if you like.. Send an email to rosi-l-request@cornell.edu. The body of the email should just said the word ‘join’ (without the quotes).

As they say, the Pun rises in the yeast. What I mean by this is that the newly elected Daily Sun’s 127th Editorial Board loves to pun, and also that this new Sun is “rising” in an alcohol-fermented haze much akin to the Friday mornings of most “journalists.” On all counts, I wholeheartedly approve! Mostly because they layered on the puns so thick it makes me look like, I dunno, someone who is not that big of a pun fan. Someone like Sarah Palin, maybe. Anyway, here’s just a taste of the pun-dried tomatoes that discerning punsters may chuckle about while pundering over the Board’s intropuntory article:

On Arts Editor Ann Lui ‘10, who happens to be an architecture student:

It’s too aptly ironic to simply say that she brings down the house. But it’s true: Lui’s off the train.

Well-played, Daily Pun. This next one’s not quite pun material, but it illustrates my point about journos being alcoholics:

Chief flip-cup organizer Emily Cohn ‘10 will be in the big office, making big decisions. Her keen ability to not only induce people to play drinking games, but also to win, will serve her well as Editor in Chief.

E-Cohnz for the win! Another one that’s not a pun in the strictest sense, but that we adore anyway:

Cara Sprunk ‘10 coined the term [phrase, you mean?] “how fratty are you?” which has since inspired many a mixer. She also single-handedly made Juicy Campus popular, and she subsequently killed it. It must be because she’s from Ho-Ho-Kus.

Oh, fratty silliness and silly New Jersey towns. Lastly, on super-reporter/News Editor Venus Wu ‘10:

[She] revolves around The Sun.

If only for its effortless simplicity, I think that one’s my favorite. Pun on, Sun, or else I’ll start yearning for the “best ever” glory days of the 126th.

He apparently doesn’t appreciate the grammatical intricacies of the dash — and neither do we! — so we’ll save the commentary for more qualified commentators and just repost the notification email:

Dear Seniors,

On behalf of the 2009 Convocation Committee, I am pleased to announce that Mr. David Plouffe, Chief Campaign Manager of Obama for America, President Barack Obama’s historic presidential campaign, will headline the Class of 2009’s Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, May 23, 2009.

Our committee sought an individual who has had a profound impact on the society that our class has been prepared to enter. Mr. Plouffe was the mastermind behind one of the most significant and groundbreaking elections in our nation’s history. His insights and leadership helped transform a little known state senator from Illinois to the leader of the free world.

President Obama, in his acceptance speech on election night praised Plouffe as “the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best political campaign in the history of the United States of America.”

The 2009 Senior Class Convocation will take place at 12:00pm on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Schoellkopf Stadium on the Ithaca campus of Cornell University. The event is scheduled to last one hour. No tickets are required at the event and seating is based on a first come, first serve basis.

I wish you the best for our final three months as Cornell undergraduates and hope you and your family will join us on May 23.

Very Truly Yours,

C.J. Slicklen
2009 Convocation Chair
