Hi
Searching for images of trip hammers (used to make edge tools) I came across several of the Triphammer Falls, and the CU Hydraulic Lab. What a wonderful structure - further searches and images showed its decline, with the end wall missing - freeze-thaw damage no doubt. Sadly just seen the images of its final collapse in 2009 - what a criminal act to allow such a majestic structure to decline so. I note demolition of the remaining structure and clean up is estimated at $1 to $1.5 million (I bet it ends up at least 2x to 3x that). What a shame that the money was not spent on restoring it...
Water power gave way to steam, which in turn gave way to electricity - but the most environmentally clean electicity comes from hydro-electric power. Small scale plants like that at CU are probably the way forward - a lost opportunity to study and develop small scale renewable energy sources, turbine design etc.... In the UK, we are investing in small scale plants to replace old derelict water mills - they are cost effective and profitable. What about the US getting its act together????

This article is more than lovely.

As a high school athlete, as well as a Cornell varsity athlete for quite a few seasons, I've always found it incredibly hypocritical and obnoxious for the same gay men that cling to their heterosexist, misunderstood definitions of masculinity to lack the courage to "man up" and set an example. Coming out isn't easy, and shouldn't be forced or rushed, but I think the closeted gay men at Cornell and elsewhere need to take a little less time phrasing their anonymous ads on craigslist and partying with the Mafia and take a little more time doing some self reflection.

I do want to say that after years of stomaching the presence of the Mafia, I did eventually grow to find value in the Mafia through some great conversations with past leaders of the Mafia. That value, however, doesn't exist in a deranged and deluded party scene where we choose our friends based on how hot they are, but rather in an unofficial group that welcomes everyone. For lack of better words, that mentality of the new leadership is bullshit and counterproductive to positive and healthy community building.
